Topic: Attachment and Detachment
The patterns we use when confronting crisis are formed in childhood and are characterized by "Attachment Theory." When a relationship starts, the partners are motivated by positive experiences. When a crisis is encountered, they may seem to become completely different people. Under threat, those childhood behaviors break out of the subconscious realm and subjugate the adult personality.
Professionals seeking to manage couples in crisis will benefit from understanding the attachment, including recognizing the tell-tale signs of resistance to mediation. This is particularly true in cases of detachment (anticipatory grief and divorce). In those cases, self-sabotage is a life-long challenge, and is best addressed outside of mediation.
For forty years, Brian Balke has been writing about love and its application to personal and social challenges. After a lifetime of religious, political, and psychological study, he chose hypnotherapy as the best method for offering the gift of love to the world. As well as his work with individuals, he speaks broadly on topics related to mental wellness.
